Last week we had All Hallows Day (the day after Halloween). It is when we traditionally remember the ‘good’ dead. Saints rather than demons… I find myself in a reflective mood.

Two days ago there was a train crash in my town. Two trains collided in the dark. One was a full train from London. The other from Portsmouth. By a miracle there were no fatalities. One train driver suffered life-changing injuries. The crash made national news.

Same evening, there was a car crash in a neighbouring town. A small car carrying 6 young people collided with a tree. There were two teenage fatalities and four serious injuries. There was a line in the local news.

None of us is guaranteed life or health. Nor glory and fame in death.  I think of people I know who died too young.  Remember people who have touched my life as they passed me by. Perhaps I will meet them again ‘down the road’..

I fancy some rare comfort food and prepare a quick ‘dirty’ supper: Grilled cheese and tomato on toast with torn salami and a slash of HP sauce. (That Cordon Bleu cookery course I spent my redundancy money on 30 years ago was not wasted).

‘Tubthumping’ by Chumbawamba plays on the radio. I turn it up to 11:
“I get knocked down
–       But I get up again.. You’re never gonna keep me down”

The cheesy mixture fills my mouth. My tastebuds sing with the ‘great fruity sauce’ and I am glad to be alive.
