“And I’ll lead you all wherever you may be and I’ll lead you all in the dance said she.”
In 1979, the Lady of the Dance (aka Type 1 diabetes) crawled under my skin and forever after continues to live in every cell of my body, constantly pushing buttons and stringing me along.
100 years ago insulin was invented – meaning we Type 1’s can stay alive for more than a few days after our bodies stop producing our own insulin due to auto-immune failure. But Lady D is still a cruel mistress:-
- She is fickle.
- Just when we think we understand her she trips us up.
- She makes some of us dance all day and all night until our feet fall off.
On a bad day, Diabetes takes everything we have with a pinch of salt and sugar. Then, when we fall down tired and confused, often soaked in fear and shame, she laughs in our face.
However, this ‘Belle Dame Sans Merci’ never abandons us.
She hangs around and invades every part of our lives.
She interrupts food, sleep, desire.
We are forced to carry her.
She disrespects any need we might have for space or privacy.
So – is it really possible to create harmony and self-confidence? Yes it really is.
As well as being a teacher, speaker and coach, I live a full, varied and vibrant life with diabetes. I studied nutrition and holistic therapies and I am an aromatherapy practitioner and use essential oils for my own relaxation and healing. We are all different and there are no hard and fast rules about managing diabetes. My role as a diabetes coach is to help you navigate your own journey and feel empowered to take control of your life.
If you or a loved one have Type 1 Diabetes and want to know more about receiving confidence coaching from a coach who understands what living diabetes feels like, send me a message.
I’ve lived with Type 1 Diabetes for almost 44 years and I learn more every day.
