- What do we want?
- Clear blue skies!
- Why do we want it?……
At the weekend, I tried out this hammock for size. It was blissful to lie down and hear the sea. When I closed my eyes I felt like I was on a boat. A gentle sway. A crystal moment. The sky was grey. I was wearing a duvet coat. I wanted to stay in the hammock for a long time. This is an example of what I want: To be at liberty to try new things. To radiate new energy. To share experiences.
Why do I want it? Because it makes me feel alive and free. Because I love learning through full immersion. My top values are Freedom, Creativity, Connection, Learning and Fun.
– I don’t actually care whether the sky is blue or not. I know the sun is always there behind the clouds.
It was my first time in a hammock. My first time at that stretch of coastline. My first time at the Tilly Whim caves. The coolest named limestone quarries in the world.

- What do you want? And WHY do you want it?
- What do you get? What do you keep getting?
- Are you flexible enough to change?
To get the best outcome in the world, you need to identify what you want. And, importantly, why?
Traditionally trained coaches are taught to avoid using ‘why’ questions because it is seen as confrontational and, heaven forbid, might encourage analysis of the reasons behind goals. It might even make the client look backwards for a moment or two. Coaching is conventionally about only looking forward.
There are many fine coaches offering conventional goal-orientated coaching. I am not amongst them.
If you are anything like me, you cannot trust your own judgement or make a sound decision without understanding why you want to be, do or have something. We need to identify our own core values to know why some things matters so much to us. And others are less important.
